Women nowadays are exhausted and stressed-out! Between children, occupations, family chores, and societal obligations, girls today are more busy and much more tired than ever. Scientists at the Karolinska Institute and Stockholm University’s Pressure Research Institute in Sweden looked at just how sensitive women were to sounds immediately after a few minutes of artificially induced pressure. The study builds on previous research showing a link between stress, mental exhaustion, and hearing problems like tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears.
“We understand that anxiety and hearing are related, and that those with anxiety-related ailments frequently display maladaptive reactions to acute anxiety,” explains Dan Hasson, PhD, an associate professor in the Karolinska Institute’s department of physiology and pharmacology who’s also affiliated with all the Anxiety Research Institute. Hasson and his fellow researchers chose to dig deeper by investigating the consequences of acute pressure on hypersensitivity to sound in individuals with various levels of persistent emotional exhaustion. Their chief question: Would people with long-term mental exhaustion be more sensitive to sound after being subjected to short term pressure?
Finding experimentally induced anxiety: To find the solution, the researchers exposed 208 women and 140 men, 23 to 71 years old and with low, moderate, or high levels of emotional exhaustion, to five minutes of experimentally induced stress. That stress took three kinds: physical (placing one of their hands in ice), mental (performance on a computer-based evaluation), and social (being found).
The results: Women using a high degree of emotional fatigue were more sensitive to sound than those who were not exhausted after induced pressure. Some girls experienced hearing sound at 60 decibels — the level of a typical dialog — as a noise so loud that it was not comfortable to them. Guys in the study experienced the same reaction, but it was not statistically essential.
Link between pressure and hearing: So what do these results mean? From a wide standpoint, there’s a definite link between hearing problems and stress, Dr. Hasson says, so when a woman presents a hearing issue to her physician, possible stressors in her life should also be evaluated.
In addition, there are some implications in terms of physiology: Health care professionals could have the ability to make use of stress hormone levels to determine the danger of hearing difficulties in girls that are emotionally depleted.
